At SGGT we build all our custom fitted golf clubs in our own workshop so that we can control the quality of the golf clubs we build. We custom fit shaft length, lie, loft and swingweight so that it exactly matches the specification from your session in the fitting studio.

Our Tour Performance Fitting Studios aim to match and exceed the service that Tour players get. Indeed many tour players bring their clubs to SGGT to be checked as they know the attention to detail that goes into making clubs for our golfers. So let us take you through the process so you can what goes into building a set of custom fitted golf clubs at SGGT.

Step 1: Component Check

Before we start building your clubs we inspect each individual component to ensure they completely match your custom performance requirements. The head, shaft, grip and even the ferrule are carefully checked to ensure they are 100% correct.

Step 2: Build Performance Check

Each club is checked against the custom build requirements specified from your custom club fitting session. Club lengths and swing weights are unique to each build and both are thoroughly checked to ensure they are spot on.

Step 3: Loft & Lie Re-Check

Loft & lie fitting plays a massive role in club performance, so that's why we do it twice to get the very best out of your clubs! Once during the pre-build phase and then again before they go in the box to ensure they are still correct before we package them up for delivery.

Step 4: Tip Shafts

As shown in the build video from the iron custom fitting above, the first stage of the build process is to tip the shafts. Your SGGT fitter will not only specify the length, but also where to cut the shaft or 'tip' it in order to create the right about of stiffness. Different shafts have different properties and combining this with your swing is key to produce the optimum results.

Step 5: SST Pure Shafts

We then SST Pure the golf shafts to ensure that they are orientated in the correct position relative to the head for greater consistency. For more information read our review of whether SST Puring a golf shaft makes a difference.

Step 6: Add Shafts To The Heads

Before glueing the heads to the shafts, we prep the tip of the shaft and then dip it in acetone to before adding the ferrule in the correct position. The shafts are then cut to the right length according to the specification.

Brass tip weights are then added to the bottom end of the shaft to create the specified swing weight, before gluing the head to the shaft. We like to use a two part glue with shaft beads to get a better bond with the shaft.

Glue is put into the hosel and also on to the base of the shaft to ensure maximum coverage and a strong bond. When we SST Pure the shafts, it leaves a line on the masking tape and we use this to line up with the head to ensure that the shaft is in the correct position.

Step 7: Cleaning And Adding Grips

Once the clubs have been glued, we clean and polish the ferrules and the heads to ensure there is no residue remaining. The it is onto the gripping stage where we can add additional layers or tapes or different types and sizes of grips from our custom golf grip fitting service.
