What Is Swing Weight In Golf?

Swing weight is the measurement of the relative weight of the bottom two thirds of a golf club to the top third. It is not a measurement of the actual weight of the club and we use this to ensure that each club in a set feels the same for consistency.

The main determinants for swing weight are the parts that make up the golf club, namely the head, the weight of the golf shaft, the length of the golf shaft and shape and size of the golf grip. By varying each of these factors, or by adding extra weight to any of them, you can change the swing weight of a golf club so that you can match it to the rest of the set.

How To Measure Swing Weight

Swing weight is measured using a scale of letters and numbers. There are six bands with letters A to F and then each band is graded in numbers 1 to 10. The scales starts with the lightest at A0 and goes through the sequence to F9 at the heaviest. Most men’s sets of custom irons will be around D0 and women’s golf clubs will be around C6.

Swing weight is measured on a swing weight machine that is basically a set of balance scales. These days they are digital, but in the past they used sliding weights to create the measurement number.

What Does A Higher Swing Weight Mean?

If a swing weight is higher then it means the club is heavier, which in turn means that there will be more mass to transfer energy into the ball. This should mean faster ball speeds and more distance, but the extra mass needs to be balanced against the club head speed and the heavier the club the more effort it will require to swing it. Therefore our fitters use swing weight to get the right balance of weight for optimum performance.

Why Is Swing Weight Important?

Swing weight is important is because it enables the us to create a more consistent set because the numbers are effectively a measurement of feel.

However the changes can be quite subtle and most golfers will not be able to notice a change in swing weight of 1 from say D4 to D5. A change of 3 points would be more noticeable and that could result from lengthening the shaft by half an inch.

Where you change the weight will also determine the effect it has on the swing weight measurement. For instance to change the swing weight by 1 point you could either add 9g to the shaft weight, 2g to the head weight or 5g to the grip weight.

Therefore getting the right weight in the right place for your swing is crucial and that is where the expertise of our fitters and builders comes in to create the right set up for your swing.

What Are The Benefits Of Matching Swing Weights?

  1. Better Consistency
Swing weighting helps ensure that each club in your set feels and swings the same to provide more centre strikes which leads to longer and straighter shots.
  2. Better Performance
Swing weighting aims to optimise the weight of the club for speed with the weight required to generate enough energy into the ball.
  3. Better Feel
Clubs with consistent swing weights tend to feel better in your hands. This can enhance your confidence and improve shot execution.
  4. Improved Shot Dispersion
With consistent swing weights, your mishits are likely to be more consistent, making it easier to adjust and improve your game over time.
  5. Better Set Matching
For players who mix and match different models of clubs in a set, creating consistent swing weights ensures that the clubs blend seamlessly in terms of feel and performance.
  6. Better Shot Feedback
When practicing and making adjustments to your swing, consistent swing weights provide clearer feedback on your performance.

It's worth noting that while swing weighting is beneficial, it's just one aspect of club fitting. Other factors such as shaft flex, club head design, and grip size also play significant roles in optimising your golf clubs for your swing.
