What Do Trackman Numbers Mean?

What do the numbers that show on Trackman mean when you have a golf club custom fitting session at SGGT? Our experienced fitters use Trackman to accurately measure real ball flight with Titliest balls hit outdoors. Here is our guide to what each measurement means and how it might affect your game.

What does Club Speed mean on Trackman?

Club Speed is the measure of the speed of the clubhead during the swing. Most players will usually define themselves with the swing speed of their driver as this will be the highest because it has the longest shaft. The shorter the shaft the lower the swing speed in your set.

What does Attack Angle mean on Trackman?

Attack Angle is the degrees at which the club strikes the ball vertically. If the attack angle is negative then the club is hitting down on the ball, which is good for clubs like iron custom fitting. If the Attack Angle is positive it means the club is hitting the ball on the up which is good in driver custom fitting.

What does Club Path mean on Trackman?

Club Path is the angle of attack of the club into the ball horizontally. A negative Club Path implies the club is coming from outside the target line to inside the target line through impact. This is known as an 'out to in' swing. A positive Club Path means the opposite and that the club is moving 'in to out' relative to the target line through impact.

What does Dynamic Loft mean on Trackman?

Each club has a loft on the face from its manufacture. Dynamic loft is the actual loft that is presented to the ball at impact depending on your Club Path and Attack Angle. For instance a 10° driver might have a 12° dynamic loft if the Attack Angle is positive all other things being equal. Changing swing path or the type of shaft in the club can vary Dynamic Loft to create the right launch conditions.

What does Face Angle mean on Trackman?

Face Angle is the measurement in degrees of the face of the club at impact relative to the target line. A negative number means the face is open to the target line and a positive number means it is closed. This can be due to the club set up or the swing path and our SGGT fitters will be able to identify the cause and adjust your clubs accordingly.

What does Face To Path mean on Trackman?

Face To Path is the angle in degrees of the face of the club at impact relative to the Club Path. If the Face Angle and the Club Path are the same then the Face to Path will be zero as they are both going in the same direction. A negative number means the face is closed to the Club Path and a positive number means it is open. Face To Path is a key factor in measuring Spin Axis.

What does Low Point Distance mean on Trackman?

The Low Point in your swing is where the club bottoms out on its swing path. The Low Point Distance is how far away from the ball impact the Low Point is in inches. The letter A means this point is after the ball and B means before the ball.

What does Ball Speed mean on Trackman?

Ball Speed is the measure of the velocity of the ball in mph immediately after impact.

What does Smash Factor mean on Trackman?

Smash Factor is the ratio of Ball Speed relative to Club Speed. So a club speed of 150mph and a ball speed of 100mph gives a Smash Factor of 1.5 which is almost optimum, although it can be occasionally be higher.

Smash Factor is a measure of the efficiency of the club transferring energy into the ball which is not only determined by the equipment, but also the quality of the contact by the player. Normally a Smash Factor of 1.45 to 1.5 is ideal depending on the club.

What does Launch Angle mean on Trackman?

Launch Angle is the angle in degrees that the ball launches relative to the ground at impact. This will not only be affected by the club speed, attack angle and type of club used, but also by the type of ball, which is why SGGT do golf ball custom fitting with each club fitting.

What does Spin Rate mean on Trackman?

The Spin Rate is the measure in RPM of the golf ball immediately after impact. This will vary according to the type of golf club, how it is set up in terms of loft and shaft, how it is delivered to the club and the type of golf ball that is used. SGGT uses the same premium golf balls that you will use on the course as range balls tend to be hard and spin more.

What does Spin Axis mean on Trackman?

When a ball is struck correctly and flies straight it will predominantly have back spin on and the Spin Axis will be zero. If a ball is sliced left to right it is because there is clockwise side spin on the ball. The Spin Axis is the measurement in degrees on the amount of side spin. A positive Spin Axis is a draw and a negative Spin Axis is a fade.

What does Curve mean on Trackman?

Curve is the distance in yards that a ball moves in the air due to the Spin Axis effect on the ball. L means to the left and R to the right relative to the launch direction of the ball.

What does Height mean on Trackman?

Height is the maximum height of the ball at the peak of its flight.

What does Carry mean on Trackman?

Carry is the distance the ball goes through the air from impact until it hits the ground for the first time.

What does Total mean on Trackman?

Total Distance is the is the Carry distance of the golf ball after impact plus any roll from the ball after landing.

What does Side mean on Trackman?

Side is the distance the ball lands either side of the target line. If Side is a negative number the ball is to the left of the line and if it is postive it is to the right.

What does Landing Angle mean on Trackman?

Landing Angle is the measurement in degrees of the angle at which the ball meets the ground on landing. If you are hitting an approach shot into a green this should usually be more than 40° to enable the ball to stop on the green. For some shots like drives, a lower Landing Angle may be desired to create more roll for greater Total Distance.

What does Hang Time mean on Trackman?

Hang Time is the measurement in seconds of how long the ball stays in the air from impact to when it first hits the ground.

What are the most important Trackman numbers?

With Trackman fitting there are several key numbers that we try to optimise. Obviously absolute distance is important for drives, but so is consistency and landing angles in irons so that you can get your approach shots close. All the factors above come into our evaluation, but we pay special attention to ball speed, launch, spin, carry, landing angle and accuracy.

Our Trackman Gapping Session can evaluate the distances of every club in your bag so that you know exactly how far each one is going and avoid any gaps or overlaps in distance.
