Titleist TSR Fairway Woods Review

The Titleist TSR fairway woods bring the latest version of the Titleist Speed (TS) project to the fairway. As before there are two models that replace the TSi fairways with the TSR3 fairway featuring a larger adjustable SureFit CG sole weight and the TSR2 a larger classic profile.

Expert Review

To give you an insight as to what you can expect from these clubs, we invited renowned equipment reviewer Martin Hopley to the Lyle Studio at SGGT to review the Titleist TSR drivers. Martin has over 20 years’ experience reviewing equipment for leading international titles including Golfalot, Golf World, Global Golf Post and now Golf Monthly, so over to him now.

Titleist TSR 2 Fairway Review

The Titleist TSR 2 fairway sees the sole weight move from the back of the head in the TSi 2 to a more central position to get the CG closer to the face, which will improve ball speed.

The rounded head sits very well behind the ball and the performance compared to TSi2 was pretty similar with maybe a yard or two more carry.

Titleist TSR 2 Fairway Wood Address

Both the TSi 2 and TSR 2 models easily outperformed the higher spinning TS fairway, so if you still have that model in your bag then it is definitely time to upgrade.

Titleist TSR3 Fairway Review

The TSR 3 has a smaller head than TSR 2, with more of a pear shape than its sister and also the TSi 3 as well. The TSR 3 sole weight now has 5 settings instead of the previous 3 and this gives the fitters at SGGT more options to customise performance to suit different players.

The more toe heavy look may not appeal to all, especially given the rounder nature of the TSi 2 model. However the different head shape will give SGGT more options to get a fairway that performs the best with your swing.

Titleist TSR 3 Fairway Wood Address

The TSR 3 had a more penetrating flight with slightly less spin so the carry distances were pretty similar to TSi3, but it was also more forgiving so a worthy upgrade.

Titleist TSR Fairway Woods Fitting Review

Visually I prefer the shape of the TSR 2 over the pear-shaped looks of TSR 3 fairway, so thankfully it was longer and more forgiving for me. What was interesting during my fitting with Ross at SGGT was his use of the adjustable hosel to get more accuracy.

My swing path was slightly cutting across the ball on an out-to-in swing path and most fitters would have increased the lie to lift my hands to force a different head path.

However Ross decreased the TSR 2 lie to D4 on the hosel to keep the face open to the target and the curvature went from 7 yards left to 7 yards right and back on line without losing distance. I much prefer this approach as increasing the lie makes the club feel awkward to me at address, but that’s my personal preference.

Both the TSR fairways offer similar numbers to TSi, but I would say they felt more consistent and with the different head shapes, offer more flexibility for the fitters at SGGT to work their magic.
