Are Stronger Lofted Irons Better For Your Game?

Each year all the major brands launch new irons and whilst they may differ in one way or another, the promotional message we hear more more often then not is longer distance. For many golfers, the extra distance may seem beneficial, but how is it affecting your game?

One of the key factors delivering the promise of extra yards is stronger lofts, which get stronger every year. A 6-iron that was traditionally 30° can now be as strong as 24°, which used to be the loft for a 4-iron not so long ago.

What we increasingly see is golfers hitting the ball way beyond where they should in relation to their club head speed. However, for this to happen there are several trade-offs, any one of which may impact your game.

Control Going Into The Green

A stronger loft will reduce the maximum height and spin on the golf ball. If the ball does not fly or spin high enough, it does not have sufficient stopping power to land on the green and stop there. If there is a bunker in front of the green, the choice is flying the bunker and then running over the back of the green, or going in the bunker and taking your chances from there. This shouldn’t be a decision you have to make on the golf course.

Lack Of Forgiveness

With a lack of launch comes a lack of forgiveness. For the ball to fly in the air it needs a high launch angle as it leaves the club and enough spin on the ball to hold it in the air, togther with enough ball speed to reach its intended target. With a lot of stronger lofted irons, you may not generate the desired launch to get the ball in the sky or enough spin to hold it in the sky once it gets there and therefore purely reliant purely on ball speed.

When buying a driver, one of the key factors everyone thinks about is the loft on the club. This is certainly something that should not be overlooked when being fitted for a set of irons. At SGGT, our unique benefit of fitting every iron set using 4, 6, 8 and PW means that we can closely monitor this during a fitting session.

And with our woods fitting studio next door we are fortunate enough to have higher lofted hybrids, driving irons or fairway woods to ensure that every club in your bag is delivering the results you require on the course and the set is gapped as it should be.
