Are All 6-Irons The Same?
15 December 2024
When you go for an iron custom fitting you might think that all the 6-irons from different brands are the same. Most manufacturers will fit your whole set from a single club, usually a 6 or a 7-iron and the stronger the loft the further it will go in order to tempt you to buy the rest of the set.
At SGGT we fit using the 4/6/8/P in every set from every brand and we know that the 6-irons will be different.
This is important because you need to fit your longest iron to your shortest wood/hybrid and then to your shortest iron to the longest wedges at the other end of the set. Having access to 4/6/8/P in our Hogan fitting studio makes an SGGT iron custom fitting more accurate.

However not only will the loft vary between models, but also the head shape and construction which in turn will affect ball speed, flight and distance.
To illustrate this, we took a game improvement 6-iron from each of the main brands and hit them outdoors with premium balls and Trackman using the same shaft from our range of over 85 iron shafts.

As you can see from the table below, there was a 2° difference across the five models with the highest being 26°. Contrast this with the 6-iron loft of 30° for some blade iron models and you can see already that these game improvement irons are different to other styles.

If you are coming from another style of iron head or even blending across sets then being fitted through the bag enables you to check lofts so that the 7-iron in one set does not go further than the 6-iron in another.
Game improvement iron heads also feature different head construction, with perimeter weighted chassis and thin face inserts to maximise ball speed and forgiveness. This creates different launch characteristics as you can see from the 800rpm range of spin and 8ft range in peak height from our different models.

The landing angle is key as it should be above 40° to give the ball a decent chance of stopping on the green. In this test, the Cobra and Mizuno 6-irons probably had too little loft for this swing speed and therefore a hybrid custom fitting or fairway wood custom fitting might offer a better option.
Distance gapping is key for irons because a set needs to be 7 or 8 clubs that go consistent distances in equal gaps. In our test there was a 7-yard variation in carry distance, which is almost a full club, so getting the right blend of irons in your bag is very important.
So as you can see, not all 6-irons are the same across different brands, or even across all the models from a single brand. SGGT has all the options to ensure that whichever model or style of head you prefer, we will have the 6 iron as well as the 4, 8 and PW for you to try to create the optimum set for your game.
