Breakthrough Golf Technology (BGT) was founded by legendary golf designer Barney Adams, of Adams Golf fame. BGT initially started off by creating composite shafts for putters that were more stable and now have evolved this into wedges with the BGT ZNE shaft.

The USP of the ZNE (pronounced 'zone') shaft is the Stiffness Stack in the centre of the shaft where the stable graphite butt of the shaft meets the steel tip within an aluminium sleeve. This isolates the flex point of the shaft and creates more stability and consistency.

The BGT ZNE shaft does not come in different flexes but in three weights so that golfers can get the right feel for the shaft. To see how this performed we invited our resident reviewer Martin Hopley into test the shaft with our wedge fitting expert Scott Fraser.

Martin commented: "In testing the clubs indoor on Trackman for full shots and outdoors on grass with Titleist golf balls for short game, the BGT ZNE has a unique feel. The change in diameter of the shaft where the Stability Stack is located is a little different visually, but illustrates the feel and kick you will get from the lower section of the shaft."

"The shaft felt very stable and you could feel the head zip through in a controlled manner creating good levels of spin. Golfers of all levels could benefit from this type of shaft as the greater consistency I noticed in distance with full shots will benefit every player."

Scott added, "It is great to see a company like BGT bring something new to the wedge shaft market. I have tested this shaft with golfers of all levels and I like the consistency, flight and spin that it brings. Martin's longer wedge shots with the BGT shaft had a much tighter dispersion with better distance control. Even on shorter shots we see many golfers benefit from this type of shaft as the combination of materials creates a balanced, solid feel."
