TaylorMade Launch Stealth Utility Irons

TaylorMade has today launched the Stealth DHY and UDI utility irons and SGGT already has them in stock for you to test and be fitted for. Both clubs are upgrades to the SIM versions and come with several new features to make them more playable.

TaylorMade Stealth DHY Utility Iron

The Stealth DHY has had the biggest makeover with a redesign of the trailing edge to make it look a lot sleeker at address and narrow the sole more. The face is now made from forged 4140 steel that wraps around the leading edge for better ball speed and feel. The hollow head is now filled with SpeedFoam Air which is also in the P790 irons and this is 69% less dense than the previous version. This saves weight that can be moved elsewhere in the head to improve performance.

TaylorMade Stealth UDI Utility Iron

Like the DHY, the UDI has undergone a similar transformation with a sleeker look around the trailing edge and the same technical changes in the head and face construction. The big difference between the models is that the UDI weight is in the back rather than the sole of the head, in order to get the CG placement in the right position to create the best launch. The slightly shorter head and less hosel offset mark this out as the better player model but, as always, fitting is required to get the correct model.

TaylorMade Stealth Utility Iron Reviews

At SGGT we test all the new models when they come in to see how they fit into the range or options we can offer golfers. To give you an insight as to what you can expect from these clubs, we invited renowned equipment reviewer Martin Hopley to SGGT to review the Stealth Utility irons. Martin has over 20 years experience reviewing equipment for leading international titles including Golfalot, Golf World, Global Golf Post and now Golf Monthly, so over to him now.

TaylorMade Stealth DHY Utility Iron Review

The first thing we did was to compare the Stealth DHY to the previous SIM DHY, which was one of the easiest to hit utilities in the market. The Stealth immediately felt more solid at impact and a bit more steady through the swing as the stock shaft had a better weight and performance. The visual changes to the head made it look less square and reduced the visible trailing edge at address to make it more appealing.

In terms of performance on Trackman using Pro V1 balls outdoors, the Stealth produced similar numbers to the SIM, but I would still upgrade as the looks and feel are distinctly better.

TaylorMade Stealth UDI Utility Iron Review

Even though the UDI has a more compact look I was getting better results with the SIM version than both the DHYs. Having seen many fittings, Scott observed that the wider sole of the DHY was probably not suited to my swing and the narrower sole of the UDI allowed me to get into the bottom of the ball easier and therefore create a better impact. This is an important benefit of an independent fitter as most brands push you in one direction based on handicap, but really it is choosing the best performing club for you that matters.

Visually the changes to the Stealth UDI were more subtle, but they did make it look better. However, being able to get into the back of the ball easier resulted in a little more ball speed that saw an increase in carry of a couple of yards. As well as this gain, the UDI also sounded and felt better and is one of the more forgiving utility irons in the market.

Martin's Summary

Both models are easy to blend into sets and are proper iron replacements rather than iron based hybrids which can go too far. The UDI is more of a muscle back style and we can see this figuring in a lot of player sets during the Scottish Open and The Open Championship over the coming weeks for players who want to control trajectory, but with more forgiveness than an iron.
