Titleist TSR Driver Review

The Titleist TSR range is the 3rd evolution of the Titleist Speed Project (TS) program that started with the TS four years ago and then brought us TSi. Now we have TSR which Titleist say is the culmination of everything they have learned over this time.

There are three different heads in the line-up and at SGGT we test all the new models when they come in to see how they fit into the range of 210 driver shafts SGGT can offer golfers.

The TSR changes are around the shape of the heads and the position of the weights, combined with a faster face that uses the same advanced 425 Aerospace Titanium in the face as the previous TSi model with a rough surface to manage the impact with the ball.

Titleist TSR 2 Driver Face

The crown has been made a little taller and drops off more sharply to improve club head speed as well as looking classy in an all black finish.

Expert Review

To give you an insight as to what you can expect from these clubs, we invited leading equipment reviewer Martin Hopley to SGGT to review the Titleist TSR drivers. Martin has over 20 years’ experience reviewing equipment for leading international titles including Golfalot, Golf World, Global Golf Post and now Golf Monthly, so over to him now.

Titleist TSR 2 Driver Review

The Titleist TSR 2 driver has the biggest footprint of the 3 models with a deep head that draws back the CG point for the more forgiveness.

Titleist TSR 2 Driver Sole

The trailing edge has been modified to reduce drag with the weight position under trailing edge of the crown facing the rear.

Titleist TSR 2 Driver Address

With my club head speed of around 95 mph I was getting nearly 3 more yards carry with the TSR 2 over the previous TSi 2 thanks to slightly less spin and 2.7mph extra ball speed. Ross of SGGT, who was doing the fitting, commented that most of this gain came from the off-centre hits maintaining more speed, so the TSR is certainly more forgiving than TSi.

Titleist TSR3 Driver Review

The TSR 3 driver differs from TSR 2 due to the smaller head and the moveable SureFit CG weight which is in a similar style and position as before.

Titleist TSR 3 Driver sole

It’s there more for fine tuning the CG position after you have got the correct loft using the SureFit Tour adjustable hosel. The face is a little bit taller too, thanks to the more compact head.

Titleist TSR 3 Driver address

In the Lyle studio on Trackman with Pro V1 balls I saw a much bigger improvement in forgiveness compared to the previous TSi 3 driver. The spin was down by 500rpm which is significant although the carry distance between the old and the new model was about the same.

Titleist TSR4 Driver Review

For the TSR launch, Titleist has brought out the TSR 4 model at the same time as TSR 2 and TSR 3 and with good reason.

Titleist TSR 4 Driver sole

This is the most compact of the three heads, with a tall face and two fixed weight positions in the front and back of the sole to move the weight between. The CG is further forward in the TSR 4 driver, so you will need to get it out of the middle to get the best results.

Titleist TSR 4 Driver Address

Compared to the previous TSi 4 it was more forgiving and longer too, with 600 rpm less spin and 4mph more ball speed creating an extra 7 yards carry and 16 yards total distance. Sounds perfect, but you would need to be able to manage the lower level of forgiveness.

However by putting the weight in the back you can create a driver that performs almost like a 'TSR 3.5' so your SGGT fitter will be able to help you pick the right option.

Titleist TSR Driver Fitting Review

So which is the best driver for me? This is where the expertise of SGGT fitters like Scott and Ross comes in to analyse the data. For me it came down to the TSR 3 and the TSR 4.

The TSR 4 was carrying it a few yards longer and the extra club and ball speed probably came from the more compact head which will move through the air quicker. However the trade off is less forgiveness, so don't always go with the longest.

That meant that TSR 3 was the best choice for me as it gave similar results with more margin for error and visually I preferred the larger size of TSR 3 head. If you have TSi 3 already then it will be interesting to see if you get a greater gain with TSR 3. Certainly the gains with TSR 2 and 4 were significant and the total distance was comparable to the other leading drivers in the market.
