Vega Classic VSC VMB VDC Irons Review

By independent reviewer Martin Hopley
Vega Classic Line irons are high end forged irons that come from Japan. Founded over 120 years ago, Vega use forging processes based on the ancient art of creating samurai swords and the Classic Line irons are sharp weapons.
There are three models in the range and I took them into the Hogan Studio where SGGT does iron custom fitting to compare the models and highlight the differences. One thing that is the same across all models is the lies and the lofts (even if they are on the strong side), so this is a range of irons that is ideal for combining in a blended set.
Vega VSC Irons Review
The Vega VSC iron is the most forgiving of the range and feature a Single Cavity design to offer a little bit more forgiveness. This is relative as the VSC is not as forgiving as the larger cavity backed Vega Mizar irons.
The VSC is more of a players forged cavity back and the feel was much better than the Mizar and felt lighter to swing with better balance.
At address there was a mid-sized top line with an offset hosel to improve the launch and the sole is curved and a little wider than the VDC to draw the CG back and help with the launch.
This was the easiest of the three models to hit so most single figure players will probably end up in this set right through the bag.
Vega VDC Irons Review
The Vega VDC irons have a similar style to the VSC, but with a Dual Cavity design that raises the centre of gravity to create a more penetrating flight.
It has a more blade like look at address but there is still enough of a top line and offset to give better players some confidence.
The VDC sole on the right below is a little thinner than the VSC on the left with a straighter trailing edge and a leading edge that has not been pre-worn.
With the CG closer to the face I did find this easier to launch, probably as I could get under the ball more easily. However the VSC is not particularly forgiving on mishits so this is a set aimed at elite players, although some may blend some of the shorter irons into a VSC set.
Vega VMB Irons Review
If you are following the naming convention then the VMB brings the Muscle Back to the Vega range. This is definitely a blade in the old school design and as a result is more about feel and playability than forgiveness.
The more compact head has a thinner top line and very little offset so this is for elite players who want classic looks in a no nonsense forged head.
Vega Classic Irons Review Summary
The Vega VSC, VDC and VMB models collectively offer a family of quality forged irons that have the classic blade styling. Relative to todays high tech players irons there is less forgiveness for the head size.
However this does mean that the consistency of performance is a little better. If you hit it in the middle or not you will get the clear feedback both in the feel and the flight performance.
The performance in distance terms is very similar, but as you can see from the Trackman data below, the more compact the head gets, the less the spin and the peak height becomes.
Therefore it will depend on your club head speed and how well you can strike them as to which set will perform the best for you and that is where SGGT iron custom fitting comes in.
They are not the cheapest set of irons in the market, but simple forged blades are hard to come by these days so if that is what you are after then SGGT has them for you to try.
