TaylorMade P790 2023 Irons Review

The TaylorMade P790 2023 irons build on the success of the previous version with some subtle changes to the inside of the heads.
The P790 irons feature a sound stabilisation bar which as its name suggests, is there to modify the sound and to support the structure of the hollow foam filled head. In the 2023 version the position of the bar moves progressively up through the set to position the centre of gravity in the right position to optimise ball flight and spin.

In the longer irons, the CG is now a whopping 1mm lower than before and as you move through the set it gets progressively higher to take account of the increased loft.
This bar is only in the 3 to 7 irons, as is some other features such as the Thru-Slot SpeedPocket in the sole, before the 8-PW revert to a more standard design.

To see what difference this makes, I went into the Hogan Studio at SGGT to test the TaylorMade P790 irons through the bag with the 4, 6, 8 and P that are available with every custom iron fitting here.
Starting at the top end of the bag, the 4-iron has a long head that seems a little shallower than most. The tungsten in the sole helped give the club plenty of forgiveness and it was surprisingly easy to hit.

As you can see from my Trackman stats using Titleist Pro V1 balls hit outdoors, the landing angle was just below 40°, so with my club head speed, a higher flying and steeper landing hybrid custom fitting might be a better option.

The 6-iron had a more traditional look, again with a generous head, thicker top line and just enough offset to help without looking too game improvement. The feel was very good and the mid irons are where all the P790 tech seems to comes together to get the best blend of feel, speed and performance.

The 8-iron is where the sole loses the Speed Pocket and the stabilisation bar and sometimes you can notice this if you do a full set fitting. To their credit TaylorMade has improved this transition over the years and the 8-iron sounds and feels as good as the longer irons. However this approach does make blending across different TaylorMade irons more difficult, so if you like the P790s then sticking with the full set throughout will be the best play.
The wedge was also very good, although for me the 1.8mm offset seemed more noticeable compared to the longer irons. The wide sole and the thick top line did not seem to look as 'better player' orientated as the 6-iron does. However it is all about the performance and in that regard there was nothing to fault with the 45° wedge.

Overall the 2023 version of the TaylorMade P790 irons are an improvement on the previous version and are one of the models that I can see SGGT recommending for a lot of single figure golfers and improving mid-handicappers.

The matt finish with clean lines on the back of the head gives a classy understated look and that should have wide appeal. Check that each club will work for you using the SGGT 4/6/8/P custom fitting approach and you will then have a set that performs right through the bag.
