The Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 irons join the full range of custom fitted Callaway Irons in the Hogan Studio. As with every other model, SGGT's iron custom fitting has 4, 6, 8 and W in right and left hand versions so that you can test through the bag to get the right combination.

The Callaway Apex Ai irons are an upgrade to the previous Callaway Apex 24 iron review with a number of significant changes.

The Callaway Apex Ai200 Irons feature a classic clean look of a single muscle bar across the back of the club.

The forged body also features a forged face that is a little bit shorter in length than the previous Apex model. The face is also forged from 455 steel using Callaway's Ai Smart Face design that is based on hitting data from thousands of shots.

Callaway Apex Ai300 Irons Review

Callaway Apex Ai300 irons follow the same design as the Ai200, but in a larger head with a little more offset.

The lower and deeper centre of gravity will get the Ai300s launching more easily. As a result the lofts are 1° stronger throughout the set and the soles are a little wider too.

Conducting this test is scratch golfer and SGGT fitter Aaron Ellis in the Hogan Studio at SGGT where we fit for through the bag using 4/6/8/P to dial in performance for each person.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 4-iron Comparison

The Ai200 4-iron is excellent with a good high flight and plenty of control. It performed a lot like a driving iron, so those who play long irons off tees will absolutely love this.

Whilst the Ai300 4-iron carried the ball the same distance, but the flight was completely different. The spin is low, the peak height dipped and Aaron didn’t see the relative lift in ball speed. Anyone who needs these irons probably should consider a hybrid custom fitting for a 3 or 4 hybrid.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 6-iron Comparison

Considering it’s a players distance iron, the Ai200 had a lot more control than you would think. However the Ai300 6-iron was where this model came alive and the similar flight with more speed gave this model an advantage.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 8-iron Comparison

Again the performance of the Ai200 8-iron was everything you would expect from a good players' iron. The Ai300 was again longer and the landing angle was good enough for a short iron to stop. However the stronger loft was noticeable, so it would depend if this club provides the same stopping power at slower swing speeds.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 Wedge Comparison

With more offset the Ai300 wedghe may not appeal to all, but it is a very powerful wedge. The key then would be to ensure that the gapping to your specialty wedges was correct using the SGGT wedge fitting service to determine which is the best option for you. The Ai200 wedge offers that great combination of forgiveness and control that was right up there for this category of club.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 Irons Verdict

These irons bring the classic Apex look to the latest Ai Smart Face face technology and both models are a modern take on renowned Apex models like the CF16 and CF19 of old.

Callaway Apex Ai200 v Ai300 Irons Custom Fitting

The Ai200 irons will suit low single figure handicap golfers who want that little bit of forgiveness in a classic looking head. Right through the set they were very good, particularly in the shorter irons.

The Ai300 irons do bring more forgiveness to the Apex line, but the stronger lofts and lower spin will need careful fitting. Most people may start the set at 5 or 6 and then there could be an option to blend in the Ai200 in some of the shorter irons if required, as long as you maintain your distance gaps.
