Callaway Apex UT 2024 Driving Iron Review

By independent reviewer Martin Hopley

The Callaway Apex UT 2024 utility driving iron replaces the previous Apex UT is more of an evolution of the design. The head is more compact and the shape of the face is a little shallower than before and is styled to blend in with the Callaway Apex Pro, CB and MB 2024 irons I reviewed.

The hollow steel head features a Forged 455 steel Face Cup design where this faster material wraps around the leading edge of the sole in order to create more ball speed from lower strikes. The sole also features a Dynamic Sole Design with a pre-worn leading edge for better turf interaction at impact.

The head has more offset at address than the Apex Pro iron and with the thicket top line offers more forgiveness and a higher launch than the blade alternatives.

In the Hogan Studio I was able to compare the Apex UT '24 with the rest of the 4-irons from the Callaway Apex 2024 range using Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. As you can see from the results below, the Apex UT created the longest carry of the 3 models and that is mainly due to the higher launch creating a better trajectory.

The landing angle was under 40° which is what SGGT look for so that the ball stops on the green, but it was better than most of the standard irons. My driver swing speed it around 100mph so if you swing it faster than this, then the Apex UT would be an option as you could have the speed to create the launch to deliver more carry and a better landing angle.

For me the Apex UT utility iron was more forgiving and easier to hit that the Apex Pro 4-iron, but in reality a hybrid custom fitting is going to find a club at this end of the bag that is better suited to me. The only exception to this would be if I wanted a driving iron for hard and fast fairways in which case the 20° #3 or 18° #2 options would be worth considering as the landing angle is less important in these instances.

To see which option is right for you, please book a utility iron custom fitting at SGGT.
